Brew Master

Hey I'd like to start a new endeavor. I'd really enjoy learning the fine craft of brewing beer. I don't know much about it other then I really enjoy testing out different kinds of brews. I love exotics and hard to find beers. Recommendations and suggestions are appreciated! Culinary is my passion and I'd love to own my own eatery and maybe have a brewery on premise. If anyone can aid me in my quest I'd really appreciate it. If you have any tips, hints, or suggestions let me know. The worst case scenario, I walk away with a sweet hobby.

  1. James, the first step in becoming a brewer is picking up a copy of The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, by Charlie Papazian. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL. You must read this book, then re-read it. Some of the techniques and chemistry will seem weird, but you will appreciate having read it before you start. Pick up a homebrew kit, preferably one that has a carboy (fermenting container) rather than just buckets. Pick up your ingredients, I recommend picking up a 'kit' ingredient set for your first batch to get the hang of it... follow the techniques from the book (you DID read the book right?). After your first batch... well congrats, you are a homebrewer, you will be hooked. You simply CANNOT beat the fresh unfiltered taste of homebrewed beer... In time you will learn to create recipes for any style of beer you wish to brew. I also have many, many recipes I've created myself, that I would share... Good luck with your new hobby... 4. I'm on www.homebrewtalk.com, I go there to read other posts... I don't post a whole lot, but there is tons of information and tips to be learned there. Dude I can talk beer all day... I've been brewing for about 10 years. I write my own recipes, I can brew the lightest light beer, or the heaviest stout, that you can stand a spoon up in. I also brew mead... Just wait til you learn about mead... HOLY SHIT that stuff is yummy... In fact I'm doing a batch this weekend. It takes at least 6 months before its ready, but is so worth it. I bottled a bock beer about 3 weeks ago, and is now ready... delish... My next batch... I'm thinking a nice amber ale... a little light in body, but with a nice roasty aroma, and of course I love to finish with Cascade hops (definitely my favorite)... Anxious to share tips as you get started... later
